It doesn’t matter how great your product looks, tastes or feels when it leaves your business premises the only thing the customer is interested in is what state it’s in when it turns up on their doorstep.

It is therefore vitally important that not only do you choose a courier company which is fast and efficient but also one which respects your goods and takes a pride in delivering them in perfect condition. However having earmarked such a company it’s also vitally important that you play your part by making sure all goods are carefully and securely packaged. This is particularly true of delicate items and below we have come up with our 10 top tips to help you package fragile items effectively:

  • Use strong, rigid packaging which will retain its shape if the parcel comes into contact with other items during transit.
  • Use padding to ensure products don’t move around inside the packaging. There are a number of suitable products including bubble wrap, polystyrene chips, polyethylene foam, shredded paper or aircushions. Wrap small parts, like legs or arms of figurines, separately.
  • Always mark your package fragile so the courier is aware the content is delicate but make sure this is in addition to careful packaging and not instead of.
  • As well as using packaging to ensure items don’t move about, conversely do not over fill boxes or they may burst open.
  • Seal your packaging securely – strapping is the best option but if you do not have access to a strapping machine then use strong tape and plenty of it.
  • Invest in good quality packaging products; from the boxes to the tape there is no point skimping on quality when your goods, and ultimately your company’s reputation, are at stake.
  • If you will be shipping fragile items regularly then do lots of trial runs and subject them to some fairly rigorous testing before handing them to your courier company. Ultimately everything can be transported safely you just need to do your research as to what is the best packaging for your particular product.
  • Source specialist packaging material if necessary. There are plenty of suppliers online and some even offer bespoke packaging.
  • Don’t over pack. Make sure packages can be easily handled by the courier; a heavy, or unwieldy package is at greater risk of being dropped than one that is manageable.
  • In the unfortunate event of your goods proving just how fragile they actually are, it is important to make sure your courier company is adequately covered by insurance. Quality packing and a good courier company should avoid any nasty surprises but it is always best to be prepared.
